Hey John Gray

well let me tell you bout john gray
born in eighteen fifty thray
oh a showman just promotin everyday
printing posters posting bills
Down on Main Street at Kimbel's
in our town called Willimantic U.S.A.

when he wasn't advertising
well ol John he was devising
a new show to hit the road and make some pay
in old wagons painted red
a couple circuses he led
meeting folks and telling jokes along way

chorus
and they say hey john gray
what cha got for us today
paste your posters up all over town
oh won't you keep us entertained
bring us stars by ol steam train
yeah your stage is all the rage for miles around

well Johnny started booking all
of the best shows at Franklin Hall
cause the train from New York came right into town
then a man named Silas Loomer
built an opera house much newer
to allow for all the crowds that had abound

Soon ol John was at the Loomer
As the Manager he grew her
kept it packed with brand new acts oh every day
They had actors they had singers
they had burlesque and hum dingers
and a band that let you dance the night away chorus

well once there came a couple guys
a syndicate to organize
all the theatres cross the good ol USA
when their requests became demands
ol' John was quick to take a stand
Yelling, "Theatre Independence! All the way!"

and when the moving pictures came
oh on a Sunday john did play em
lord the ladies of the church they went insane
they had him charged on christmas day
for showing films on a sunday
he paid a fine oh how the times they have a changed chorus
well John he kept the loomer lit
with all the best stars he could git
For 34 years brought the big cheers and applause
but with the movies and the war
well the hay days were no more
hey Johnnys time would be it's prime the best it was

so John remained the town bill poster
till his final curtain closer
now I'm bettin up in Heaven you can hear
all the angels in the crowd
having fun and getting loud
at Johnny Grays heavenly stage where they still cheer chorus
